Our Founder and CEO

Shane Scanlan

Spokesperson Shane Scanlan brings over 14 years’ experience in the nursing home sector, including a decade as Person in Charge, and it is that lived experience which underpins the Alliance’s work. Shane understands firsthand what it means to sit across from inspectors, to manage staffing rosters during shortages, to balance rising costs against fixed funding, and to carry ultimate responsibility for residents, families and staff. Though no longer working operationally within a nursing home, Shane’s grounding in the day to day realities of nursing home care gives the Alliance a level of credibility that cannot be manufactured.
Through Shane’s leadership, a renewed and determined focus has been placed on those nursing homes most exposed to financial risk, particularly independently owned homes in rural towns and smaller urban communities. Shane has consistently highlighted how many of these providers operate smaller, de-congregated settings, often with lower per resident funding despite caring for residents with increasingly complex needs. As Shane has made clear in engagements with policymakers, when one of these homes closes, the loss is not simply clinical. It is felt in local employment, in parish life, in families forced to travel further from loved ones. It is a community loss.

At the same time, Shane recognises that larger nursing home groups also require a strong, modern and commercially aware voice. Under Shane’s direction, the Alliance has positioned itself as that new voice, one that engages confidently at senior levels of Government, within the Department of Health and across state bodies. Shane has ensured that members, whether independent operators or nursing home groups, are represented with clarity, professionalism and purpose. Crucially, The Alliance offers better value for money than our competitors ensuring Nursing Homes are investing more back into care of their residents.

Since Shane helped establish the Alliance, the sector has seen the most significant increase in NTPF per-resident weekly rates since the Nursing Home Support Scheme Act 2009 was established. Shane has brought fresh, informed voices into Leinster House, reframing the cost of care debate around real operational evidence rather than theory. That persistent engagement has helped ensure funding discussions reflect the lived reality of providers across the country.

At its heart, Shane’s approach is rooted in community and partnership. He believes nursing home owners deserve representation that works as hard as they do, representation that is accessible, energetic and outcome focused. Through Shane’s leadership, the Alliance offers not just membership, but meaningful influence, practical support and a credible voice advocating for the sustainability of nursing homes in every county in the State.
